Technology for structural consolidation and decontamination
The preservation of works of art and cultural heritage is Consolidas’ field of expertise.
Solutions to complex quests in material consolidation and detoxification are provided by combining innovation with tradition.
Consolidation
Works of art and monuments made of stone or wood, which are exposed to outside weathering, will degrade, deteriorate and finally vanish within time. Traditionally, these objects are replaced by copies, or are removed to a more stable inside environment. Being aware that the meaning and importance of a work of art can only be communicated by the unique original in its original setting, Consolidas provides possibilities to keep them stable in their actual condition. Degradation by weathering is interrupted.
By applying an organic or inorganic binding media in the wooden or stone matrix, a new structure is built inside the object, allowing the work of art to remain in its natural context. The treatment is not visible on the outside.
Decontamination
Almost all organic works of art or construction materials have been treated using biocides. What was meant as a protection against fungus and pests is now a severe problem in the art and heritage sector. The biocides used are contact or respiratory toxins like PCP, Lindane, DDT and Naphthalene. Affected are for example books, wall tapestries, costumes, sculptures, paintings and furniture, parquet, panelling and construction frameworks. The toxins degas to the air or reach human beings through the contaminated dust causing severe health problems.
With decontamination and barrier strategies, the safe and sound interaction with the artwork is achieved again.
Consolidas – innovative concepts and competence in conservation for all fragile works of art.
